Cooler temperatures are on the horizon, but not before humidity returns and they climb again on Sunday, as storm fears aren’t gone just yet

New Yorkers face a ‘sticky’ few days despite lower temperatures coming next week, with locals hoping these more modest days could keep Storm Erin away.

Forecasters say most people will experience sunny weather in the mid 80s, but it will feel hotter than that, more like the 90s. And the threat of rain may emerge if storms form.

Cooler temperatures are on the horizon, but not before humidity returns and they climb again into the 90s on Sunday.

Humidity more reasonable

Forecasters from Storm 4 said: “humidity will be a lot more reasonable” today, but it’s back on Sunday with temperatures again ahead of a cold front coming in.

“That’s going to bring our temperatures back near 90 degrees”

The weekend forecast are looking fairly similar with heat readings staying in the same region. Although less humid today forecasters say humidity will return on Saturday and Sunday.

However, fears remain that Storm Erin could turn into a full blown hurricane this weekend.

Will Hurricane Erin hit New York?

Next week shows a cooler picture which meteorsologists saying this should keep Hurricane Erin away. The tropical storm has looks like it will bypass the east coast allowing New Yorkers to heave a sigh of relief as the hurricane moves on

A forecaster for Storm 4 added: “It’s much more reasonable next week and cooler front may be just enough to keep Erin, a tropical storm we are watching out in the Atlantic, away from the east coast.”

The cooler temperatures will be welcome as they should steer Hurricane Erin further away and allow New Yorkers to relax as tracking shows the hurricane will not reach land.

Relief after serious storms

The relief on the weather front follows a period of destructive storms which brought down trees and power lines leaving people without power.

Strong winds brought down trees in the Bronx and Queens, with cars parked nearby left crushed. In Long Island, downed power lines left some people without power. Work crews were left working for hours to restore the traffic lights.

Gusts were over 60mph and rain also caused some flash flooding. Some beleaguered residents needed rescued from among the flooding.

The storms came after a woman died amid dangerous rip currents off New York’s beaches.

Although the immediate storms came to end on Wednesday night they brought high temperatures and heavy clouds and even more storms.

Forecasters are still desperately tracking Storm Erin, the first hurricane of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Tropical Storm Erin continued moving westward yesterday and waseast of the Lesser Antilles islands.

It is expected to turn toward the west-northwes with this motion expected to continue into next weekend. The center of Erin is likely to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts.

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or so depending on different reported models. But for now it looks like New York City has escaped the worst.
